Every parent has been there. The meltdown in the grocery store. The screaming match over homework. The moment when your child’s behavior feels completely out of control and you have no idea what to do next. Behavioral struggles and self-regulation difficulties are among the most common reasons families seek therapy, and they are also among the most treatable — when approached the right way. At Caine Therapy & Consulting in Carrboro, NC, I offer in-person Saturday sessions focused on behavior, self-regulation, and parenting skills for both children and the adults who love them.
What Is Self-Regulation and Why Does It Matter?
Self-regulation is the ability to manage your emotions, impulses, and behavior in response to what is happening around you. It is the skill that allows a child to take a breath instead of throwing something. To use their words instead of their fists. To sit through something frustrating without shutting down completely. Learn more about self-regulation and child development at the Harvard Center on the Developing Child.
Self-regulation is not something children are simply born with or without. It is a skill that develops over time through experience, relationship, and practice. When a child has experienced trauma, chronic stress, or significant adversity, the development of self-regulation is often disrupted. The brain learns to stay in survival mode rather than settling into the calm, regulated state where learning and connection happen.
What Drives Behavioral Problems?
Behavioral problems in children are rarely just about behavior. Underneath almost every meltdown, defiant episode, or aggressive outburst is an emotion the child does not know how to handle, a need that is not being met, or a nervous system that is stuck in overdrive. When we treat only the surface behavior without understanding what is driving it, we get short-term compliance at best and a deeper sense of shame in the child at worst.
My approach digs beneath the behavior to understand what is really happening — in the child’s brain, body, and environment — and then builds the skills to address it from the inside out.
Skills I Teach Children
In our sessions, children learn practical, age-appropriate tools for managing their emotional world:
- Identifying and naming emotions before they escalate
- Recognizing physical signs of stress in their own body
- Calming strategies that actually work for their nervous system
- Problem-solving skills for conflict and frustration
- Language for expressing needs and setting limits
- Understanding boundaries and why they keep everyone safe
Skills I Teach Parents
A child’s nervous system does not regulate on its own — it co-regulates with the nervous system of a safe, calm adult. That means the most powerful thing a parent can do is learn to regulate themselves first. I work with parents to build their own toolkit:
- Understanding the brain science behind their child’s behavior
- Responding instead of reacting when things escalate
- Setting boundaries with warmth and consistency
- Repairing the relationship after a difficult moment
- Building connection that makes children want to cooperate
- Recognizing when their child’s behavior is trauma-driven
When parents and children are learning together, the work moves faster and the results last longer. That is why I often involve caregivers directly in sessions or offer separate parent coaching alongside a child’s treatment.
