EMDR Intensive

You have done talk therapy. You have read the books. You understand your trauma. So why do you still feel it? If you have been stuck despite years of work, an EMDR intensive may be the shift you have been waiting for.

When Understanding Is Not Enough

Talk therapy gives you something invaluable. Language. Context. The experience of being genuinely heard. But there is a ceiling that talk therapy can reach, particularly for trauma, where the understanding lives in the thinking mind while the wound lives somewhere much deeper.

You can know exactly why you are the way you are and still feel powerless to change it. That gap between knowing and feeling is not a personal failure. It is biology. Trauma is stored in the nervous system, in the body, in the parts of the brain that activate before you even have time to think.

An EMDR intensive gives us the uninterrupted time to go all the way there and all the way through.

You may be ready for an intensive if:

  • You have completed significant talk therapy and still feel stuck
  • You understand your trauma but cannot seem to move past it emotionally
  • You feel angry or resentful in ways that feel older than the present moment
  • You feel numb, disconnected, or like you are watching your own life from the outside
  • You are tired of managing symptoms and ready to address the root
  • You are able to self-regulate effectively and do not have a significant history of dissociation

Two Days. All Eight Phases. A Genuine Shift.

An EMDR intensive is a concentrated, immersive approach to trauma processing that replaces months of weekly sessions with two consecutive full days of dedicated, uninterrupted work. Rather than constantly starting and stopping the process week after week, an intensive creates the space to follow the healing all the way through.

At Caine Therapy & Consulting, every intensive takes place in person at my Carrboro, NC office and is designed specifically for adults who have a foundation of talk therapy and are ready for something deeper.

1

Saturday Morning

Comprehensive clinical assessment. We take the time to understand your full history, identify what we will be targeting, and build the foundation for everything that follows.

2

Saturday Afternoon

Preparation. We build the inner resources, stabilization skills, and sense of safety that will support you through active reprocessing. Nothing happens before you are ready.

3

Sunday

Reprocessing. We move through the targeted experiences using bilateral stimulation, following the natural flow of your nervous system for as long or as little time as needed.

4

Monday

Rest and integration. I ask every intensive client to take Monday off work. This is a clinical recommendation, not a suggestion. The brain continues processing and rest is part of the treatment.

A Paradigm Shift, Not Just a Better Week

People who complete an EMDR intensive often describe what happens afterward as a paradigm shift. Not a subtle change. Not feeling a little better. A fundamental change in how they relate to their own past. Results vary significantly by person and there are no guarantees, but this is what genuine healing can look like.

The Past Stays in the Past

The memory does not disappear, but its emotional charge changes. What once produced flooding and overwhelm begins to feel like something that happened to you, rather than something still happening.

Anger and Resentment Lift

Many people describe a significant reduction in the anger and resentment they have been carrying toward themselves and others, as the unprocessed trauma driving those feelings is finally addressed at its root.

You Redefine Yourself

When you are no longer organizing your identity around your wounds, you get to ask a different question: who am I when I am not carrying this? What do I want? What brings me joy? These questions become accessible in a new way.

The Healing Does Not Stop When You Leave

The brain and body continue their work of integration long after the intensive ends. For some people, this looks like a profound sense of lightness and relief immediately. For others, it looks like what is called a healing crisis, a temporary period of fatigue, emotional release, or the deep need to be still.

A healing crisis, when it occurs, is not a sign something went wrong. It is often a sign that something is going very right. Your nervous system is doing the work of processing and integrating what has been stored, sometimes for decades. Some people are drawn to spending time in nature, to quietude, to grounding activities that help the body settle. All of this is normal and valid. It varies significantly depending on the nature of the trauma being processed.

This is precisely why I ask every intensive client to protect their Monday. Rest is not optional downtime. It is part of the treatment.

Who This Intensive Is Not Designed For

I believe in being honest about fit because setting someone up for the wrong experience helps no one. An intensive with me is not the right match if you have not yet completed significant talk therapy, if self-regulation is still a significant challenge, or if you have a significant history of dissociation.

This does not mean intensive EMDR work is not available to you. Other skilled clinicians specialize in working with these presentations, and an intensive may be right for you in the future with the right preparation. I am happy to help point you in the right direction if we determine that the timing is not right.

  • You have not yet completed a meaningful course of talk therapy
  • Self-regulation is still a significant area of difficulty
  • You have a significant history of dissociation
  • You are not able to commit two full days and a recovery Monday to the process

Not sure whether you are a good fit? Reach out and we will figure it out together. There is no pressure and no obligation.

EMDR Intensive vs Weekly EMDR Sessions

Both approaches use the same evidence-based EMDR protocol. Both can be profoundly effective. The difference is in the structure and what that structure makes possible.

Weekly EMDR Sessions

  • Fifty to ninety minutes once per week
  • Process opens and closes each session
  • Paced approach, good for building foundational skills
  • Works well for those earlier in their therapeutic journey
  • Can be combined with an intensive as a complementary approach

EMDR Intensive

  • Two full consecutive days of dedicated work
  • All eight phases completed without interruption
  • Process follows its natural arc without the constraint of the clock
  • Designed for adults with a strong therapeutic foundation
  • Can produce shifts that weekly sessions take much longer to achieve

An intensive can also serve as a powerful complement to ongoing weekly therapy, whether with me or with another clinician. Learn more about EMDR from the EMDR International Association.

A Note from Brooke

I Have Been Where You Are

In my own twenties, I experienced work-related trauma. I did significant therapeutic work around it, real and meaningful work that helped me understand what happened and why it affected me the way it did. But I could still feel the remnants showing up in how I engaged with certain people, in the resentment I was still carrying toward those who had wronged me, in the space I was still giving to experiences that belonged in my past.

After EMDR, something shifted. I was able to stop holding onto the memory and the emotion attached to those experiences. I stopped centering the people who had hurt me. They no longer had space in my present that they had not earned. That is what genuine processing feels like. Not forgetting. Not excusing. Releasing.

I offer EMDR intensives because I know what it feels like to understand your trauma and still feel stuck in it. And I know what it feels like on the other side.

You Have Already Done the Hard Part

Years of talk therapy prepared you for this. Now it is time to let the work go all the way through. I would be honored to walk those two days with you.
