Trauma has a way of making the past feel permanently present. A smell, a sound, a look on someone’s face, and suddenly the brain and body are back in the middle of something that happened years ago. This is not weakness or overreaction. It is the nervous system doing exactly what it was designed to do — protect you from danger. The problem is that long after the danger has passed, the alarm keeps going off. At Caine Therapy & Consulting in Carrboro, NC, I offer in-person trauma therapy using EMDR and Brainspotting on Saturdays, giving children and adults access to two of the most powerful trauma-processing approaches available.
Why Talking About Trauma Is Not Always Enough
Traditional talk therapy asks people to describe their traumatic experiences and understand them intellectually. For some people and some experiences, this is genuinely helpful. But trauma is not just a story stored in the thinking mind. It is stored in the body, in the nervous system, in the subcortical brain regions that do not respond to language or logic. This is why many trauma survivors can talk about what happened for years without ever feeling truly different. The story changes but the body stays stuck.
EMDR and Brainspotting were both developed specifically to reach the parts of the brain and body where trauma lives, working directly with the nervous system’s own healing capacity rather than relying on language alone. How EMDR Helps Process Trauma
EMDR, which stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, uses bilateral stimulation, typically guided eye movements, to help the brain reprocess traumatic memories in the same way it processes ordinary memories during REM sleep. When trauma is processed through EMDR, the memory does not disappear. What changes is the way it feels. Something that once caused flooding panic begins to feel more like a memory that happened, rather than something that is still happening.
EMDR is recognized by the World Health Organization, the American Psychological Association, and the Department of Veterans Affairs as an evidence-based treatment for trauma and PTSD. I offer EMDR for children, adolescents, and adults in my Carrboro office. EMDR sessions are adapted for children using age-appropriate language, pacing, and bilateral stimulation methods.
How Brainspotting Reaches What Words Cannot
Brainspotting was developed by Dr. David Grand and is built on a deceptively simple idea: where you look affects how you feel. Specific eye positions called brainspots correspond to where trauma is stored in the subcortical brain, below the level of conscious thought and language. By identifying and holding these eye positions in a deeply attuned therapeutic relationship, Brainspotting creates conditions for the brain to process and release what has been stored, often reaching experiences that are preverbal, body-based, or too overwhelming to articulate.
Many clients describe Brainspotting as going deeper than anything they have tried before. It is particularly effective for children who struggle to put their experiences into words, for adults whose trauma predates language, and for anyone who has tried talk therapy and felt like something essential was still not shifting.
What Trauma Therapy Looks Like at Caine Therapy
Trauma therapy always begins with safety and stabilization. Before any processing work begins, I take time to build trust, understand your history, and equip you with the tools to manage whatever comes up between sessions. The work moves at your pace, not mine. You are never pushed to go somewhere you are not ready to go.
For children, I integrate parents and caregivers into the process so that the healing that happens in the therapy room is supported and reinforced at home.
